ANALYSIS: Has Luka & Co. been hit hard with the health-and-safety protocols bug? Sure. Is that the only thing raising Dorian Finney-Smith's upside? No, sir. DFS has been playing 33 (!!!) MPG on the year through 31 games played, has started every freaking game he's been part of, and the injury/COVID bug the Mavs are surfing has only meant a slight uptick in usage rates. Other than that, DFS has been his long-time self.
Dorian is putting up an average 16-5-3 line per game in the past two weeks of play (five matches). He's scored double-digit points in five games straight, he's shooting 46.8% from the field in that span, and he's hoisting a healthy 12+ FGA even on just a subpar 16.8% usage rate. But that was the case prior to this last couple of weeks. In the 26 games before, DFS was averaging a 9-4-2 with 1.5 SPG and 0.5 BPG.
Finney-Smith is definitely not a league-winning player, but it's not that you can find more solid nightly starters playing 33+ MPG and putting up good numbers on a per-game basis. The shooting is sitting at a nice 44% from the field and on top of that DFS is scoring 1.9 3PM hitting long-rangers at a sound 37% clip. Only around 20 players in the League are putting up 5 RPG, 2 APG, and 1 SPG this season, and DFS is as close to them as it gets and still available in nearly 50% of Yahoo leagues.
