Deebo Samuel's Role Won't Change Next Season
3 years agoSan Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who was the team's MVP on offense in 2021, had over 1,000 receiving yards by Week 12 and began taking meaningful snaps out of the backfield in Week 10. Samuel averaged around 11 snaps at running back in the final 10 games of the season, and despite the extra pounding he'll take at the position, the 49ers don't plan to change his role as a "wide back" with a contract extension looming. And at 220 pounds, Samuel can take the pounding that other pass-catchers can't. The 26-year-old could lose a little value in PPR leagues if he catches fewer passes in this role moving forward, but dual-threat quarterback Trey Lance could also unlock more potential for Samuel moving forward. As long as Samuel is getting plenty of touches on a weekly basis, his playmaking skills give him WR1 upside.
