Colts May Need To Restructure Carson Wentz's Contract
3 years agoIf the Indianapolis Colts decide to trade quarterback Carson Wentz this offseason, they will likely have to restructure his contract. Currently, Wentz has three years and around $82 million left on his deal, and the $28.3 million he's owed this year ranks 10th among quarterbacks. If he's released by March 18, he would only be owed a $15 million base salary and he'll also count $15 million against the salary cap, but he'll free up $13.3 million. The Colts could pay Wentz $28.3 million in 2022 and then owe nothing in dead money if they released him next spring. If he's on the roster by March 18, three days into free agency, he'll be owed $27 million in 2022. Trading Wentz might be difficult unless the Colts restructure his contract to take on some of his remaining deal. Either way, a resolution should come before March 18, but it's clear that the Colts aren't sold on Wentz after his first year in Indy.
