Mets Checked In On Freddie Freeman
3 years agoESPN's Buster Olney said on The Michael Kay Show on Thursday that the New York Mets checked in on free-agent first baseman Freddie Freeman before the lockout in early December. The New York Yankees have also been interested in the five-time All-Star and 2020 National League MVP. It was widely assumed that Freeman would return to the Atlanta Braves after winning the World Series, but the perception in the industry now is that he'll land elsewhere. Mets owner Steve Cohen has proven he's willing to spend, already signing Max Scherzer, Starling Marte, Mark Canha and Eduardo Escobar. With the designated hitter coming to the NL in 2022, the Mets could put Freeman at first base and Pete Alonso at DH. Freeman is one of the best all-around first basemen in the league, slashing .295/.384/.509 with 271 home runs and 941 RBI in his career.
