ANALYSIS: The 2020 Saints, like in most years past, sport a versatile array of on-field offensive assets, and just like before, Drew Brees is dishing out more than enough to go around. This means that there is even enough room for rookie tight end Adam Trautman to make an impact, even as the Saints deploy three additional tight ends in Jared Cook, Josh Hill, and fashionable multi-tool Taysom Hill. Trautman might not have gotten top exposure through his career at the University of Dayton, but the 6'6 Flyer took home about all of the FCS hardware that a TE can grab after recording 916 yards and 14 touchdowns off of 70 receptions in 2019 (in only 11 games), demonstrating enough potential as a high-volume offensive playmaker to warrant New Orleans drafting him 105th overall in the third round.
Although he was seeing the field at a decent clip after Week Two, Trautman's involvement in the Drew Brees feeding frenzy was minimal for the season's first half, with his best outing coming in Week Three against the Packers, notching two receptions on two targets for 17 yards while taking part in 32 offensive snaps (52%). Then, in the Saints' 38-3 route of Tampa Bay on Sunday Night Football, Trautman's abilities began to shine through, reeling in three catches of his three targets, good for 39 yards and a touchdown over his 29 snaps on offense (40%). It is quite clear that the crowd on offense, and at his position, present obstacles on the path to consistent contribution. However, even in the limited sample size, his 12.2 Y/R and 86% catch rate make him just as formidable of a threat as anyone he is competing with, and now that his future HOF quarterback appears to be warming up to the connection, it seems like an opportune time to roll the dice on Adam Trautman.
