Analysis: It is a good thing that Alex Bregman has defensive versatility, because that Houston Astro infield is looking a little crowded nowadays. The current #22 prospect in all of baseball hasn't gotten off to a great start in the big leagues with a 0.036 BA and .136 OPS. However, those figures come in Bregman's first seven games with just 28 AB. The sample size doesn't warrant panic. In two seasons and 586 minor league AB since Houston selected him #2 overall from LSU in 2015; Bregman has been on a war path to the MLB. He held a .300/.386/.503 slash line, hit 24 HR, stole 20 bases, and with 68 strikeouts he struck out eight less times than he walked since he took 76 total free bags. Bregman has gotten off to a rough start and it is true that playing time might not be so secure moving forward when sharing the infield with Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, and newly acquired Yulieski Gourriel. However, Bregman is incredibly talented and has demonstrated the ability to adapt and develop his skills quickly. He is flexible in the field, hits for contact, has greatly improved in the power department, and has shown the ability to steal bases. When he finally takes off, there won't be another chance to grab him this easily.
