Alex Gordon Out Eight Weeks: Jarrod Dyson To Start

Alex Gordon will be out for eight weeks, after the Kansas City Royals outfielder was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain of his left groin.

The injury occurred on Wednesday when the 31-year-old was attempting to track down a fly ball in left field. It appeared as if he barely hit the wall, but he went down and couldn’t even make an attempt to get the ball that he was chasing.

"Put it this way, when I really screw up in a game, I'll wake up in the middle of the night and have this pit in my stomach, right?" Royals Manager Ned Yost told ESPN.com. "I woke up last night and had that horrible feeling in my stomach, and I said, 'Wait a minute, I didn't screw up. And we're not on a losing streak.' And then it hit me -- Alex Gordon. So it runs deep."

Gordon was selected to start in Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game. It was supposed to be his first start and his third selection. The four-time Gold Glover had a .279 BA with 11 HR, 39 RBI and .852 OPS for the AL Central leading Royals. He’s been a mainstay in the outfield for nine seasons in Kansas City.

Jarrod Dyson is starting in left on Thursday, and will likely see most of the action while Gordon is on the shelf.
