During the Top 100 Prospects special on MLB Network, Cardinals top prospect Alex Reyes was named as MLB's 13th-best prospect. Between three levels of the minors last year, he compiled a 2.49 ERA, 1.174 WHIP and 151 strikeouts in only 101.1 innings.
Reyes finished last season at Double-A, where he went 3-2 with a 3.12 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 34.2 innings. Even more impressive than the stats alone is that Reyes was 4.4 years younger than the average age of his Triple-A competition. That's some mammoth potential brewing from the 21-year-old. Currently, there is no visible path for Reyes to take to the Cardinals this season outside of the bullpen or multiple injuries in the rotation (both of which are very real possibilities). His strikeout potential alone would make Reyes an instant add in just about all leagues, regardless of the role. As can't-miss as a pitching prospect can get, Reyes will be a trendy deep sleeper pick in a lot of drafts. When his name does come up, try to remember that this isn't the season to go overboard to acquire him.
