Jake Arrieta dominated his way to earn his 20th win of the season on Tuesday as the Chicago Cubs shut out the Milwaukee Brewers 4-0.
The right-hander gave up a leadoff double to start the game but allowed two more hits and one walk throughout the rest of the game. Arrieta struck out 11 batters on his way to becoming the first pitcher to reach the 20-win plateau this season.
The 29-year-old owns a 20-6 record with a 1.88 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 220/48 K/BB ratio to boot. If anybody in the NL can overtake Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw for the Cy Young award, it’s Arrieta. Either way, the Cubs have the man they want on the mound when they likely take on the Pittsburgh Pirates in the one-game Wild Card matchup.
Over his last seven starts, Arrieta allowed just two runs while pitching 54 innings. He might be the hottest pitcher going today. His next start will be next Monday against the Kansas City Royals.
