Analysis: Asdrubal Cabrera had a surprising 2016 campaign as his power rebounded to levels last seen in 2011. Given that, many reasonably expected regression heading into the season and he is widely available in many league formats because of it. Always a player who could make a decent amount of contact, Cabrera's value is highly dependent on his spot in the lineup and the amount of power he can pack into his swing. Early season returns are positive in both regards, as he has batted second in all three games to this point in the season. Given his solid contact rate, he should have a chance to stick there all season.
If he does remain in the number two spot, his RBI potential will be limited in the long-term, but he should have plenty of run scoring upside with the likes of Yoenis Cespedes, Curtis Granderson and Neil Walker batting immediately behind him. As for his own performance, early season returns have been good for Cabrera as he has reached base at least once in each game this season. He has yet to record an extra-base hit but has driven in two and scored a run. He has also stolen a base, which is somewhat of a surprise and should not be counted on moving forward.
