ANALYSIS: Bartolo Colon has pitched fairly decent as the New York Mets 4/5 starter, but will likely take a backseat once Zack Wheeler returns. Since that won't happen until early July, Big Sexy is pretty safe in his likely ephemeral role in the starting rotation. With good reason.
We can't ask for much more out of the 42-year-old veteran, as he's held opponents to three or less runs in all four of his starts this season. He's tallied 20 strikeouts over that span and was plagued by a lack of run support in two no decisions, and an undeserving loss where he surrendered only one run in six innings of work against the Philadelphia Phillies earlier in the year. The expectations should remain low with someone continuously shoeing away father time, but Colon is capable of eating innings and doesn't seem to be affected by inevitability and age. He may not be a long-term option, but his next two starts are against the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres. The Braves have scored the fewest runs in the league while the Padres are just inside the bottom 10 of runs scored.
