Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Monday that there is mutual interest between the club and the impending free agent starting pitcher after the 32-year-old’s best MLB season.
Estrada finished the regular season with a 13-8 record and a 3.13 ERA. It was by far his best season of his eight-year career. The right-hander picked a great time to become a free agent, especially after how well he pitched in the postseason. He went 2-1 with five runs allowed in three starts over 19 1/3 innings pitched. Estrada went 7 1/3 innings in Game 5 of the ALCS with only one run allowed to keep Toronto’s postseason alive until it lost in Game 6 by one run.
The Jays have the offense to get back to the postseason next year. They need the pitching to help, and Estrada could be one of the pieces in the starting rotation to make it happen again.
