New York Yankees starter Bryan Mitchell was struck by a line drive to his face during Monday’s start against the Minnesota Twins during the second inning.
The bullpen of the Yankees was able to be good enough for the 8-7 victory but Mitchell was the story because of the bloody nose that forced him to leave the game after Eduardo Nunez hit a come-backer right at Mitchell’s nose. He has since been released from the hospital with a small nasal fracture, according to MLB.com.
Not only did the injury shock the fans and Yankee teammates but it shook Twins manager Paul Molitor.
"I get goosebumps talking about it," Molitor told The Daily News. "You're playing the game, and then you see someone go through something like that."
"I know they've talked about trying to find that protective cap for pitchers. They haven't come up with anything that looks very practical as of yet. The face is pretty much something that's going to be unprotected, no matter what you do," he told The Daily News.
It’s unknown if Mitchell will land on the DL or not. His next start is certainly in question but he was just beginning making the conversion from reliever to starter anyway. With Michael Pineda on the DL, it’s unsure who will fill the spot in the rotation.
