Mark Buehrle’s scheduled start for Saturday has been moved to Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves.
The Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher was scheduled to face the New York Yankees in a huge divisional series in what could be a battle for the AL East crown. Instead, Buerhle is going to get an extra few days rest for a sore left shoulder.
The left-hander received a cortisone injection on Wednesday, and a few more days will give the elbow more time to respond well to the shot. Marcus Stroman has been activated from the 60-day DL and will make his 2015 debut in Buehrle’s spot.
“I’ve had them before," Buehrle told The National Post about receiving a cortisone shot. "Still could've pitched on Saturday if need be. Obviously, Stroman’s ready and they want to put him in there, so they pushed me back to Tuesday. I’m for it."
In 2014, Stroman went 11-6 with a 3.65 ERA in what was his rookie season. He has been recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee.
"He's completely healthy," Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos told ESPN about Stroman. "That's the first priority and concern for us. Everything we discussed with him has been health, and everything we discussed with our staff has been health. He feels good. We've checked for inflammation, and he's been cleared."
