Buy Low and Sell High: Just Drop 'em and Waiver Targets for Week 20

It’s likely the trade deadline has passed in your fantasy baseball league, and now you need to take some advice for the home stretch.  There's still plenty of time to make a stretch run at that league title.

Sell – You need someone to tell you it’s alright to drop certain players, as much as it pains you to do so.  Sometimes this is a tough decision.

Buy – Pickup a waiver wire guy who can make a positive contribution to your squad for the stretch run-- there are difference-makers available, as long as you pick the right guys.

Buy ‘Em

For other Buy ‘em players, check out Joe Berger’s weekly Prospect Primer

  1. Paul Konerko on August 10, 2011Paul Konerko – It's an unlikely scenario, but he's worth a flier if he should be traded.  His nine homers and .240 BA are bad, but if he gets moved, his numbers could move as well.
  2. Ike Davis – Since his return, he has shown great plate discipline, and over the final couple of months, he could return to the form he showed in the second half last year.
  3. Erick Aybar – If you need a MI or SS, Aybar is a cheap option and likely available.  He has two steals and four runs over the past 10 games, and his average should improve a bit, too.  He left the game on Tuesday with a calf injury, so monitor that situation.
  4. J.P. Arencibia – He's  an annoying player to own because he will go 0-24, and then 6-10 with four home runs.  You just need to pick and choose the matchups wisely and it could pay off handsomely.
  5. Mark Reynolds – DO NOT START HIM.  But Reynolds is currently available as a free agent and with the right team and situation, he could provide very cheap home runs.  Like many players, you will pay a cost to start him-- in Reynolds's case, his career average is very ugly, but those power numbers speak for themselves.

Sell ‘Em

  1. Starlin Castro – What a disappointment. He has almost 500 AB, and five players have fewer than 400 AB but more runs scored.  18 players have more steals.  There is nothing positive about Castro, and if you are still waiting for him to produce, this is me telling you to give up.
  2. Ryan Howard – His season has just about come to an end, and so have the hopes you had that he would hit you 15+ homers in the second half.
  3. Salvador Perez – On a positive note, he really doesn’t hurt you, given that he has a .274 batting average, but his offensive production in terms of runs, HR and RBI is quite low.  Dump him in 10-team mixed.
  4. Ben Revere – Even if Revere returns, which is questionable at best, this Philly team is well below any sort of motivation scale.  I wouldn't label Revere as a guy who can provide you with cheap steals if he returns.
  5. Derek Jeter – Even if Jeter returns, he won’t play every day.  In games that he starts at SS, he will likely be removed late for defensive purposes.  It appears very unlikely that he is worthy a roster spot with September callups right around the corner.
