Are you looking to trade? If your answer is “yes”, then the RotoBaller.com Buy/Sell Weekly Article is where to find five players of the week to Sell High and five players to Buy Low.
You trade for one of two reasons:
- You need a shortstop, have an extra third baseman and someone has as extra shortstop. You trade a third baseman for a shortstop. Done.
- You have a player who is exceeding expectations. He is unlikely to keep it up, so you trade him for a position you need. Done
In this week’s edition of Buy/Sell we will look at players that could start the season hot, that you should consider placing on your trading block:
Buy ‘em –
- Jason Heyward – Heyward has struggled and shown very few signs that he is going to bounce out of this slump-- that’s your cue to take advantage. We aren't expecting him to bat .300 for the second half of the season, but a spike in most offensive categories is very likely.
- Desmond Jennings – Because of his potential and pedigree, Jennings will definitely cost you a bit, but if you can get him for the right price, you’re looking at 12 home runs and 15+ stolen bases in the second half of the season.
- Aaron Hill – Hill is coming off the DL shortly and given the lack of depth at second base, he can offer you substantial power at the position. He will provide HR and RBI at a thin position, so now is the time to make your move. Don't wait until he is off the DL and starts hitting to try and make a move.
- Jose Bautista – Bautista isn't really struggling so badly that you are buying “low,” but we do expect his numbers to increase quite a bit.
- Marcell Ozuna – Ozuna is batting 4th for a very poor offense and hitting the ball well. He'll benefit mightily from Giancarlo Stanton's return from the DL. Ozuna is batting .326 and seeing the ball well. Expect big(ger) numbers assuming this offense forms any sort of cohesion.
Sell ‘em –
- Alex Gordon – Gordon’s rank is not a good reflection of what he provides, and what he provides may even decrease a bit. He lacks HR and SB, and while he keeps you batting average up and racks up runs, you can find better in the outfield. If you can sell at his on-pace rate, do it.
- Domonic Brown – Brown is playing out of his mind right now. It’s very tough for any owner of his to actually pull the trigger when he is hitting homers every other night, but no one can keep up this pace. Brown has 12 home runs in the past 30 days. Hang on to him until he cools off but if he cools off too much, you may lose out on prime value.
- Josh Donaldson – It’s a certainty that he will slow down. With any luck, (a) you have another 3B you can start in his place and (b) there is a team out there in dire need of a 3B. This is an ideal situation where you can take full advantage.
- Howie Kendrick – I can understand why anyone would be skeptical of trading the talented second baseman. I have always waited for Kendrick to have that breakout year and while it’s looking like this might be the year for him, it’s unlikely he is going to maintain this value. Again, this is all pending you have a replacement for him and another owner has a need.
- Allen Craig – Craig has been somewhat of a disappointment. He is also an injury risk. He hit a home run a few days ago and you should monitor how he progresses because its inevitable he will hit the DL at some point this season. We don't wish it upon him, of course, but it is likely. If you investigate a deal involving Craig, play up the angle that the other manager is buying low, so that you can maximize your return for this underperforming stud.
