The San Francisco Giants placed Matt Cain on the 15-day DL with a nerve irritation in his right elbow, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.
The starting pitcher has struggled since his original return from the DL but will have to sit out again before possibly turning it around for a Giants team that is in the hunt for October. Cain will be replaced by Chris Heston in the rotation. Heston will start on Sunday.
Cain, 30, has posted a 6.15 ERA and 1.58 WHIP through his 10 starts this season to go along with a 2-4 record. The three-time All-Star has struggled the last few seasons after averaging a sub-3.00 ERA in three out of four seasons. The right-hander might not have a spot in the rotation when he comes back depending on Heston’s performance.
Heston owns an 11-7 record with a 3.34 ERA as a rookie. He was sent down last week but will rejoin the team after stringing together two solid starts where he allowed two runs total. He was sent down to rest but the team needs him now if they want to surpass the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the NL West.
