The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the teams interested in signing free agent Ben Zobrist to a multiyear deal, according to ESPN.com.
The utility infielder is going to make some money on the market and the defending National League Central champions want to be the ones to provide it. After another solid regular season between the Oakland A’s and Kansas City Royals, Zobrist was able to be a key component for the Royals as they won the 2015 World Series.

The 34-year-old batted .276/.359/.450 with 13 HR, 36 2B, and 56 RBI in 126 games this past season. Besides playing great defense at a handful of positions, Zobrist proved he could deliver in the postseason. He batted .303 in 16 games with 2 HR, 6 RBI and 7 BB. He was arguably the Royals’ best player against the New York Mets in the World Series. Whenever the team needed a hit late in the game, he always seemed to be in the center of the rally. It was a great taste to leave in the mouths of all MLB general managers that would love to have someone so versatile.
The Cardinals won 100 games last season, which was five more than any other team in MLB. They won’t be losing any infielders to free agency but if they could add Zobrist to the lineup, it could solidify an already solid attack. There’s also the chance that Jason Heyward won’t be in St. Louis because the outfielder’s a free agent. Zobrist could replace Heyward’s bat in the order.
There could be up to a dozen teams that attempt to acquire Zobrist. The New York Mets and the Washington Nationals are among the teams interested in signing him. The Royals still want to keep him as they hope to win back-to-back World Series titles. When someone can hit and play so many positions well like Zobrist, he’s still going to get a food deal despite his age.
