Carlos Gomez took batting practice on Monday for the first time since he suffered a strained intercostal muscle two weeks ago.
The Houston Astros outfielder was able to serve as a pinch-runner on Sunday but hasn’t been able to swing the bat or play in the field since the injury occurred. Gomez could potentially be cleared to play over the next day or two even though a intercostal muscle injury normally takes at least a month to heal properly.
Carlos Gomez just got in the batting cage here at Safeco Field. He's testing his intercostal that's kept him out of lineup 2 weeks

“It’s the first time I’m going to hit BP in the field. If everything goes well I’m going to play. I’m not going to be 100 percent,” Gomez told Chron.com. “I don’t think in two weeks or three weeks I’ll be 100 percent, but I think at 70 percent I can help do things and play the level that I can help to win games.”
Gomez hasn’t produced like he normally does since the Milwaukee Brewers traded him to the Astros. The 29-year-old owns a 234/.282/.379 batting line with 4 HR and 13 RBI since joining the Astros. Houston is going to need him since it blew its lead in the AL West while only hold onto the second AL Wild Card spot by half a game. He isn't recommended for fantasy owners to consider.
