Carolina Panthers Sign Wide Receiver Jarrett Boykin

The Carolina Panthers are a team desperate for a legit number two wide receiver opposite Kelvin Benjamin. Jericho Cotchery was serviceable in that role in 2014 but he's not the type of player who would scare defenses enough to protect Benjamin. Cotchery's 48 receptions on 78 targets for 580 yards aren't exactly stellar.

The signing of Jarrett Boykin gives us some insight that the Panthers recognize their need for depth at the position. Boykin was virtually invisible on the Packers last season upon losing the role of number three receiver to rookie Davante Adams.

I wouldn't expect Boykin to suddenly develop into a bonafide number two guy leaving Aaron Rodgers for Cam Newton, but it's an interesting name to keep an eye on as the season approaches.

The Panthers likely aren't finished beefing up their wide receiver corps so expect them to add another name either via the draft or free agency. If the question is "who is the number two pass catcher on the Carolina Panthers?" the answer isn't even a receiver anyway. It's clearly tight end Greg Olsen.
