ANALYSIS: Cesar Hernandez has quietly put up All-Star numbers the past two season posting 4.3 and 3.3 WAR in 2016 and 2017. These numbers are even more impressive considering how weak the Philadelphia offense has been. Last year, for example, the Phillies finished 27th in total runs with 690, and Hernandez accounted for 85 of those on his own. With the addition of Carlos Santana and a whole season of Rhys Hoskins, the offense as a whole can expect to improve, and Hernandez in the leadoff spot looks to push above 90 runs. That makes him a top-six second baseman in runs scored at the position.
Fantasy owners can be encouraged by the fact that Hernandez has maintained a .294 AVG even after seeing his BABIP drop by 10 points in 2017. Even more, among 2B he finished 7th with 15 steals and 10th in hits with 150 in 2017. The fear for owners in the lurking Scott Kingery, but with appearances at SS, 3B, and LF don't expect the team to bench their lead-off man when he's the one that Kingery will be driving in, if he takes off.
