The Philadelphia Phillies placed Cesar Hernandez on the 60-day DL with a dislocated left thumb, which will put an end to the infielder’s season.
Hernandez collided with Anthony Rizzo during the Phillies 7-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Rizzo was on base when the 25-year-old attempted to field a ball. The two collided, which caused the broken thumb for Hernandez.
The utility player was having a solid first full season in the big leagues with the Phillies. Hernandez finished the year with a .272/.339/.348 batting line with 19 SB in 127 games. He was getting a chance to play second base every day after Philly traded away Chase Utley. It was a tough time for him to get injured because he had 14 hits in his last 11 games.
Darnell Sweeney will likely take over second base duties while the Phillies recalled Chase d’Arnaud from Triple-A Lehigh Valley as a backup infielder.
