Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Charles Sims may be behind Doug Martin on the depth chart as of right now, but he has earned a permanent role as a "jack-of-all-trades" with the team. Through the first four games of the season Sims has seen 128 snaps, 59 percent of those snaps were running pass routes, 20 percent were runs out of the backfield, 15 percent of the time the team relied on Sims' pass protection skills and 6 percent of the time Sims was asked to run block.
According to Pro Football Focus, Sims is currently the sixth most efficient pass blocker of all running backs currently in the NFL.
Unfortunately, fantasy football leagues don't give points to running backs for their blocking skills, so the fact that he has become one of the best pass-blocking backs in the league doesn't mean much for fantasy owners. But the fact that Sims has earned a permanent role with the team is great news. It may be just a matter of time before he unseats Martin as the team's starter.
Even if he does continue to backup Martin, Sims' playing time should only increase as time goes on. He may eventually work himself into a RB3 role, especially in leagues that give points per reception.
