Chris Sale is already in mid-season form as he struck out 13 batters over six-plus innings Wednesday in his final minor league game.
The Chicago White Sox's ace is set to start the 2015 season on April 12. Sale suffered an avulsion fracture on right foot while at his home on February 27. The Sox are slowly bringing the left-hander along. He seems ready to return and be one of the top pitchers in the game this season.
Sale gave up one run on two hits against Reds minor leaguers. If he does pitch on April 12, he will face AL Central rival Minnesota Twins.
Chicago could put Sale on the DL retroactive nine days before the season starts, according to the Chicago Tribune. The club could carry an extra player until Sale makes his regular-season debut.
“We’ve talked about both of those,” White Sox general manager Rich Hahn told the Tribune. “But it’s going to come down to, does Robin and the staff feel better having additional matchup options given the pitchers we’re facing or do we feel we need to take another arm to protect guys?”
In five seasons in the MLB, Sale is 44-29 with a 2.76 ERA as well and has been a mainstay in the AL Cy Young discussion every year.
