Gerrit Cole pitched a gem on Sunday when he hurled seven innings of three-run ball while striking out nine Los Angeles Dodgers batters.
Sunday marked the third time that Cole struck out nine in a game this season. The right-hander is now 17-8 with a 2.64 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 2015. The Pirates ace is very much in the discussion for the NL Cy Young award.
Cole’s next start will be against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field next weekend. His last start came against the Cubs when he struck out eight batters during 6 1/3 innings pitched for a no-decision. The 25-year-old has had four quality starts over his last five starts.
Cole has proven that in the likely scenario that the Pirates and Cubs meet in the NL one-game Wild Card matchup, he should be the man on the mound for Pittsburgh. He made his first All-Star team in what is only his third big league season. It has by far been his best season yet.
