ANALYSIS: Philadelphia Eagles running back Corey Clement, along with Wendell Smallwood, will likely be counted on heavily for the foreseeable future with starter Jay Ajayi (torn ACL) out for the remainder of the season. Versatile and valuable veteran back Darren Sproles (hamstring) has missed the last five games as well.
Clement compiled 69 yards from scrimmage against the New York Giants last week, which marked his first action in two weeks as he missed time with a quad injury. He accumulated 42 yards along with one touchdown on 11 carries on Thursday night. All 11 carries went for positive yards with two going five or more yards, including one for 14. He also had three receptions for 26 yards with a long of 20. Clement did all this while being on a "snap count" as he was on the field for just 24 offensive snaps (36.6%). The game against the Giants was the 23-year-old's second straight game with 10 or more carries as he garnered 16 attempts against Indianapolis on Sept. 23. He also fumbled twice in the game, although he did not lose either one.
The 5-foot-10, 220-pound versatile back is a load to bring down which is why a high percentage of his carries have occurred in the red zone. 10 of his 38 (26.3%) carries have come when the Eagles have been inside the 20. Clement has been very successful on those runs as he has tallied 50 yards and two touchdowns. He also has two goal-line attempts, totaling three yards. In addition, the second-year pro has one reception for one yard inside the 10. Over the last two seasons, Clement leads Smallwood in carries (112-90), total red zone touches (23-17) and total touchdowns (8-3). Despite being on the field for 47 fewer offensive snaps this season, he only trails Smallwood in fantasy points 37.5-to- 41.7 in standard scoring and 48.5-to-53.7 in PPR leagues.
Given the likelihood of Clement seeing an increased workload in the upcoming weeks overall as well in red zone situations, there is no better time than now to put in a waiver claim on the former Wisconsin Badger.
