Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa won the Sporting News AL Rookie of the Year award on Monday.
The award is voted on by the current players in the MLB, which showed the great praise Correa already has from his peers. The 21-year-old won the award after only competing in 99 games, but that’s how good he was to win it.
"It makes it really special," Correa told MLB.com. "The players are the ones out there grinding it out with you, against you and the ones watching you play and the pitchers are the ones trying to get you out. For me to be able to win this award, it's humbling. It means they appreciate what I did out there this year. It's a great feeling to be able to be voted for by all the American League players for this award. It really means a lot. It's truly a blessing."
On June 8, the Astros decided to call up the rookie for the first time. After racking it up for a few seasons in the minors, Correa proved it was time to shine in the majors despite his young age. The shortstop finished his rookie campaign with a .279 BA, 22 HR, 68 RBI and 14 SB along with great defense.
