Honda Classic - PGA DFS Overview
The West Coast swing is over and now we head to beautiful Palm Beach Gardens, FL for the Florida swing. The par-70, 7,140 yard PGA National Champions Course will play host to this tournament (this is Jack Nicklaus's course). The green firmness can vary, but it usually is towards the medium firmness. Now that we're in Florida, the greens are Bermuda grass. But this year the greens have grown by about 25 percent. There is also a ton of water on this course.
There are four par-3's, 12 par-4's, and only two par-5's. The 15th, 16th, and 17th holes are the coursers most famous known as, The Bear Trap.
Let's take a look at the stats from the last two years.
Stat | PGA National | Tour Average |
Driving Distance | 272 | 283 |
Driving Accuracy | 61% | 61% |
GIR Percentage | 60% | 66% |
Scrambling Percentage | 55% | 57% |
Average three-putts per round | 0.45 | 0.55 |
Player | Strokes Gained Total (last five years) |
Adam Scott | 35.12 |
Sergio Garcia | 34.36 |
Rickie Fowler | 29.97 |
Brendan Steele | 25.23 |
Justin Thomas | 25.13 |
Past winners are, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott, Padraig Harrington, Russell Henley, Michael Thompson, Rory McIlroy, Rory Sabbatini, and Camilo Villegas.
In Vegas, as of Tuesday on sportsbook.ag, Justin Thomas is the heavy favorite at 5-1. The next four are Rickie Fowler (11-1), Brooks Koepka (12-1), Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia both at 14-1.
My custom stat model will be focusing on stats from the start of the new year; SG: T2G (30%), proximity to hole (25%), par 4 scoring (25%), and SG:P on Bermuda (20%).
Fantasy Golf Lineup Picks for DraftKings (PGA DFS)
High-Priced DFS Players
There are five players this week priced above $10,000;
Justin Thomas ($11,900) - While he is my number one in custom rankings and the defending champ, I can't take him at this price. He also has missed cuts here in 2015 and 2017.
Rickie Fowler ($11,200) - He comes in second in my rankings, but I think there are better players than him at this price. He did just finish T-36 in Mexico and before that, hadn't played in three weeks.
Brooks Koepka ($10,700) - He doesn't play well if it's not a major. I refuse to pick him unless it's a major.
Adam Scott ($10,300) - This is the player I like most this week. He hasn't played since the Genesis Open where he finished T-7. He's a helluva Florida player though; number one in strokes gained total since 2014. In that same span, he's also number one in strokes gained at the Honda Classic. Scotty has won here in 2016 and finished top-15 in '14, '17, '18.
Sergio Garcia ($10,000) - For similar reasons above, I like Sergio. The last five years, he's second in strokes gained total at this tourney and ninth in that stat on Florida courses. He's also off a T-6 last week.
Middle-Priced DFS Players
Luke List ($9,200) - The solo runner-up last year hasn't played since the Genesis Open where he finished T-15. He's 10th in strokes gained total on Florida courses sine 2014. He also had a T-10 two years ago.
Byeong Hun An ($9,100) - In his only appearance at the Honda last year, he finished T-5. His only not-so-good stat is his putting, but his other stats are great.
Russell Henley ($8.600) - He comes in seventh on my custom rankings. He's made four of his last five cuts here and even won the Honda in 2014. Henley took last week off. His most recent events have seen a T-44 at the Genesis Open, cut at AT&T Pro-Am, and T-15 at Phoenix Open.
Brendan Steele ($7,000) - This is a high-risk high-reward type play. Since Steele has missed three consecutive cuts, he'll be very low-owned. But consider that he made each cut from 2014-17 at this event (did not play last year).
Low-Priced DFS Players
Stewart Cink ($6,800) - He's made five consecutive cuts here and at this price, you cant ask for much more.
Vaughn Taylor ($6,700) - He finished T-59 last year and missed cut year before. He took last week off but comes in off a T-9 at the Genesis Open.
Roberto Diaz ($6,200) - He's coming off two strong finishes, T-18 and T-10. He also was T-33 at this tourney last year.
