NHL DFS Picks for Thursday, January 21st, 2016
Welcome back for another night of daily fantasy hockey on DraftKings and FanDuel. Tonight we have a large 10 game slate in the NHL and only the Minnesota Wild are playing on back to back nights. With teams passing the halfway point of their seasons, the playoffs are starting to heat up which is providing a ton of inspired hockey. For fantasy purposes, there has been a ton of value with young players who's salaries have adjusted slowly to the success. Finding a couple of these value plays on a nightly basis allows us to spend up and roster multiple star players.
Let's take a look at a few core plays for tonight.
Jonathan Quick - Goaltender, Kings (DraftKings - $8,500 FanDuel - $8,900)
He is one of the hottest goalies in the league winning nine of his last 11 games with a .935 save percentage. The Kings have won two straight and seven of their last 10 games and are starting to look like the dominating Kings teams we are used to seeing. The Kings get a great home matchup vs. the struggling Wild who have lost four straight games and have only recorded three goals in that time.
Evgeni Malkin - Center, Penguins (DraftKings - $7,600 FanDuel - $9,000)
While the Penguins have only picked up three wins in January, the issue has not been their superstars. Malkin has picked up 14 points(9 on the PP) in his last 10 games with 29 shots on goal and 10 penalty minutes(bonus on FanDuel). This will be the first meeting between the division rivals this season and the Pens will try to turn the tides as the Flyers won all four meetings last season. Malkin, for his career, has torched the Flyers to the tune of 60 points in 46 games.
James Neal - Winger, Predators (DraftKings - $5,900 FanDuel - $6,200)
He makes a terrific cash game play as he provides a high floor with the amount of shots he takes. Over the last 10 games he has recorded 36 shots on goal and has 147 total in 46 games on the season. The production is not where it should be this season but he has had success against the Jets, In three games this year he has four points, 10 shots, eight PIMs, and a +4 rating.
Jason Spezza - Winger, Stars (DraftKings - $6,200 FanDuel - $5,600)
Spezza enters this matchup having already scored three goals in two games vs. the Oilers this season. While the top line has struggled for the Stars since the Christmas break, Spezza has been consistent with 11 points in his last 10 games with 20 shots and a +4 rating. Look for another strong game from Spezza tonight. He is a safe option in any format.
Mark Giordano - Defense, Flames (DraftKings - $6,500 FanDuel - $5,900)
Taking price into account, Giordano has been the most consistent D man on tonight's slate. He has picked up 10 points(5 on PP) in his last 10 games with 21 shots, 20 blocks(DraftKings bonus) and a +4 rating. He makes a great cash game play in a road matchup in Columbus and also provides multi point upside for tournaments.
