NHL DFS Picks for Thursday, December 31st
We have nine games on the NHL schedule tonight on the last day of 2015. Only three teams(BUF, PIT, WSH) are playing on back to back nights but five teams(BUF, DET, LA, NSH, WSH) are playing a third game in four nights.
A couple strategy notes. For cash game construction look for players who can contribute to your score when they are not providing offense. Examples are guys who take a ton of shots, defensemen who block a lot of shots(DraftKings). Also, look for guys who get powerplay time and especially Top 6 forwards. You can find value in players who join a new line due to an injury or just get a promotion and more ice time.
For large field tournaments(GPP's) you want to find payers who have multi point upside and can grab double digit fantasy points. To stack the most upside in your forwards a common strategy is to punt the defense position. This doesn't mean just grab anyone. Try and look for a D man who will be playing more PP time or might get a boost in overall playing time due to an injury.
With that, let's dig in to find some core plays for New Years Eve.
Jake Allen - Goaltender, Blues (DraftKings - $7,700 FanDuel - $10,200)
A great option if you are paying up for goalie tonight. He has won three straight and five of his last six starts and sits with a 18-8 record with an impressive .927 save percentage. The blues are home favorites vs. the Wild on Thursday night.
Tyler Seguin - Center, Stars (DraftKings - $8,600 FanDuel - $9,100)
He picked up his 21st goal of the season in a 6-3 loss to the Blue Jackets on Tuesday. A team like the Stars always seem to respond well after being embarrassed, putting their top line in a great position on Thursday. The value on Seguin has switched to FanDuel where his price has come down $300 vs. going up $200 on DraftKings.
Tyler Toffoli - Winger, Kings (DraftKings - $5,700 FanDuel - $5,800)
After a prolonged cold streak, Toffoli has heated up with points in six of his last seven games including six goals in his last four games. He provides a high floor for the a cost under $6K and provides multi point upside when he is on these streaks.
Alex Ovechkin - Winger, Capitals (DraftKings - $8,800 FanDuel - $9,600)
He scored twice in a comeback win last night vs. the Sabres and has helped push the Caps win streak to nine games. He provides the highest floor of any player in the NHL with a league leading 178 shots and holds the highest upside of any player in the league.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson - Defense, Coyotes (DraftKings - $5,400 FanDuel - $5,800)
A very affordable option on both sites who provides safety on the point. He averages 15.6 shot attempts per 60 min of ice time giving him a nice floor and has added offensive upside lately with five points in his last three games.
