NASCAR Rankings Analysis
Well, this is a weird week.
Sunday's race was postponed to Monday. That happens, but it's a shame it happened this week, because NASCAR is going dirt racing and it's a real shame that dirt racing is happening on a Monday.
But even beyond the date stuff, you can tell just from looking at our rankings that this is a weird week.
Kyle Larson is No. 1 in my rankings, which is mostly normal, as he's in a top car and has been running well. He's a great dirt track driver and should be considered the favorite to win this race.
But after Larson, things get weird. We're prioritizing two things this week: dirt racing experience and place differential upside. I'm high on Christopher Bell because he's the only guy in this race who challenges Larson in terms of dirt talent, but then after that we get a lot of interesting names. Chase Briscoe could be in line for his best Cup Series run. Tyler Reddick is a great candidate to bounce back after some struggles.
I'm also high on a driver who is driving the 77 car, something I'd usually never want to do. But this track should equalize equipment issues, and Stewart Friesen is in that car. Another guy with a lot of dirt in his background, Friesen has run well in the Truck Series at their usual dirt track, Eldora. He could put that 77 car into the top 10.
Some other guys I'm higher on than usual: Chris Windom and Mike Marlar, who are both dirt guys running in cars that usually aren't good. I think Friesen has a better chance of having a strong run because Spire is a better team than Rick Ware Racing (Windom) or Carl Long's team (Marlar), but both drivers have a lot of dirt racing experience.
Drivers I don't love this week: people starting in the teens and 20s who aren't in elite equipment. Usually, guys like Chris Buescher, Aric Almirola, and Erik Jones are solid value guys, but in this race, I'd rather take a risk on someone with more place differential upside. Ty Dillon starts 39th, for instance; there's more upside there.
I'm still avoiding Josh Bilicki, Quin Houff, and Cody Ware just like I usually would.
