ANALYSIS: You are not going to call Dallas Goedert Philadelphia’s leading tight end any time soon, but what if all we’re seeing is actually for real? For the second week in a row, Zach Ertz was outperformed by Goedert. With the Eagles running all over Buffalo in Week 8, Goedert finished the game with 22 yards on three receptions compared to Ertz’s 20 yards on two catches. That’s it, you say? Well, give Goedert a receiving touchdown and then you’ll have the full picture and the reason why he was on top of Ertz for another week.
There is no chance Goedert beats Ertz in playing time right now. Goedert is playing around 46 percent of the Eagles snaps to Ertz’s 87 percent. The latter is almost doubling the former in usage, though they’re logging similar target numbers and Ertz has been rather mediocre in catching those passes lately. In the last three weeks, Ertz has eight receptions on 19 targets for 112 yards and no touchdowns. Goedert has 12 receptions on 17 targets for 139 yards and a couple of scores. In the same span, Ertz is averaging 6.4 fantasy points to Goedert’s 10.6.
At a position where options are limited in the most optimistic of days, Goedert is as good as any other tight end available. Barring the two or three weekly sure-thing players at the position this season, there is no reason to not give Goedert a chance picking him up and why not starting him. I’d go to even say that the TE2 of the Eagles is becoming more of a season-long hold than just a streaming position in deeper leagues, so if you can still get him for free go and pick him up before anyone else does.
