David Ortiz lost his appeal and will serve a one-game suspension for Friday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, according to NBCSports.com.
The Boston Red Sox slugger was suspended after an incident that took place on April 20. Big Papi made contact with an umpire in the middle of a game.
The confrontation was brought on after Ortiz engaged in an argument with third base umpire Jerry Meals in regards to a disputed checked swing. In the eyes of MLB, he then bumped home plate umpire, John Tumpane.
“I have to watch that video to see what point I touched him because I don’t remember, to be honest with you,” Ortiz told WEEI.com following the incident in April. “I don’t really remember. And I wasn’t even arguing with him. I was talking with the third base umpire. If it happened, I don’t know when it happened and I didn’t try that because trust me, I know. It might be one move that I made or whatever. But I don’t know.”
With David Ortiz serving a one-game suspension, rookie, Travis Shaw, was called up to start at first base and bat ninth, with cleanup hitter Mike Napoli shifting over to DH, according to WEEI.com.
