Jacob deGrom pitched a gem on Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers when he did not allow a run in 7 2/3 scoreless innings.
Unfortunately for the New York Mets right-hander, he did not get the win because the Dodgers scored two runs in the ninth inning to tie the game. DeGrom is 10-6 with a 2.05 ERA, which is second in the MLB only to his Sunday counterpart, Zack Greinke.
The Mets went on to win the game 3-2 in 10 innings. DeGrom did his part to help the Mets win. It was his 12th scoreless start in only 41 career games, which matches Miami Marlins pitcher, Jose Fernandez, for the most in the past 100 years.
“I knew coming into today it would probably be a close game, deGrom told MLB.com. “I wanted to go out there and just put up zeroes and give us a chance to win.”
DeGrom’s fastball averaged an eye-popping 96 mph for the second straight start. He allowed only two hits and two walks while striking out eight in 7⅔ innings.
Sunday’s pitching showdown was arguably the two best pitchers in the National League.
“Whenever I found out he was throwing this game, I was excited,” deGrom told MLB.com. “I knew it would be fun and would probably be a pitchers’ duel. I was looking forward to that.”
The 45 2/3 scoreless streak of Greinke came to an end thanks to a fielder’s choice off the bat of deGrom.
“That at-bat, they gave me the green light to swing. I wanted to try to put the ball in play and get a run in,” deGrom said. “His streak was unbelievable, and he’s having an unbelievable year. He’s a great pitcher.”
