Jacob deGrom dominated the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday by pitching eight shutout innings en route to the New York Mets victory.
Eric Campbell drilled a two-run homerun in the top of the ninth inning, which made the score 4-0 in favor of the Mets. New York Manager Terry Collins still decided to not give deGrom the opportunity at the complete game shutout, which would have been the first of his career.
deGrom, 27, struck out 10 for the fourth times this season. He only allowed two hits to the defending World Series champions. The right-hander improved his record to 9-6 with a 2.14 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 121/21 K/BB ratio in 113 2/3 innings.
The Mets trail the Washington Nationals by three games for first place in the NL East. The West Coast road trip didn’t look good on paper, but the Mets went 4-2 in six games against the Giants and Dodgers.
Wednesday’s victory will be the final outing before the all-star break for deGrom. It was announced earlier in the week that deGrom was selected for the National League all-star team as a reserve. It will be the sophomore’s first all-star game.
