Jacob deGrom bounced back with a much-needed quality start on Sunday as the New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds 8-1 for the four-game sweep.
In his last start 12 days ago, deGrom allowed six runs on 10 hits through five innings. After a skipped start, the All-Star fired six innings of one-run ball to go along with nine strikeouts. The right-hander is now 14-8 with a 2.60 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, and a 198/36 K/BB ratio over 187 innings.
The lone run actually came in the first inning when Joey Votto drove in the run with a single. After the first inning, deGrom shut down the Reds for the Mets' 89th victory of the season. The 27-year-old’s final start of the regular season is set for next weekend against the Washington Nationals.
Sunday’s game featured a ton of bench players and players that could easily not make the 25-man roster when the Mets likely take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS. Dilson Herrera and Kevin Plawecki delivered homers while deGrom actually helped his own cause when he had two hits and two RBI.
