The 36-year-old Martinez had an All-Star season in his third year with the Detroit Tigers as their designated hitter. In 641 plate appearances in the 2014 season, Victor Martinez hit to a very impressive .335/.409/.565 line with 32 home runs, a career-high, and 103 runs batted in. A very notable accomplishment in his near MVP season, in which he finished second in the award race, was his 42 strikeouts compared to his 70 walks.
Prior to the 2012 season, Martinez suffered a torn ACL but this injury will not be as severe but he will miss Spring Training and his status for Opening Day is in doubt. The torn ACL led to the signing of Prince Fielder in the 2012 season but this injury would not require a significant addition in a similar fashion.
With the addition of outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to first baseman Miguel Cabrera and the breakout success of outfielder J.D. Martinez; the Tigers were expected to be one of the threatening middles of the lineup in the major leagues but the Victor Martinez injury will be a notable absence in the middle of the Tigers lineup.
