ANALYSIS: It’s no secret that Santana packs plenty of power in his swing, as his career HR/FB rate is 28.4%. He has displayed that with two early season home runs and three doubles. However, he has been too passive at the plate for a power hitter of his caliber, both throughout his career and to start this season. By far the most encouraging early season return, however, is Santana’s swinging strike rate, as it has dropped from 14.5% and 12.1% in the past two seasons to 6.7% this season.
So long as he can continue to make contact, the power will come. With that power should come plenty of RBI, as he has batted fifth in the Brewers’ for the majority of his at-bats. Another added bonus for Santana’s fantasy outlook is his sneaky ability to swipe a few bases. Given the amount that Milwaukee is likely to run, Santana could reasonably approach double-digit steals on the season. That makes him an intriguing option and his improved strikeout rate could allow Santana to capitalize on his massive power potential.
