Is Trey Sermon Worth Drafting In Fantasy Football After Being Claimed By The Eagles?

The Philadelphia Eagles were rewarded running back Trey Sermon off waivers. The former third-round pick was let go by the San Francisco 49ers in training camp.

The 22-year-old had a limited role with the 49ers last season but never made a huge impact.

That being said, will a change of scenery be exactly what Sermon needs to reach his full potential?

Eagles Claim Trey Sermon

In a bit of a surprise move, the Eagles decided to place a waiver claim on Sermon.

This roster already has a logjam at running back and they just made it worse. The Eagles have Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell, and Boston Scott already competing for snaps in the backfield. Now, they've decided to add Sermon to the mix, which makes this even more of a mess.

At this point, there doesn't seem to be a favorite for carries in Philadelphia. However, Sermon is new to the scheme and will likely begin the season as the fourth string, assuming he even makes the active roster.

On paper, this doesn't seem to be a favorable situation for Sermon. Although, none of these backs are very consistent, so he might be able to move up the depth chart quickly in Philly.

Can Trey Sermon Succeed In Philly?

Last season, Sermon showed flashes of potential during his nine games with the 49ers.

He finished the 2021 campaign with 167 rushing yards on 41 attempts with one touchdown in nine games. The 22-year-old didn't exactly get a ton of playing time but averaged 4.1 yards per carry with the 49ers.

The biggest problem for Sermon is going to be finding playing time. At the moment, the Eagles have three healthy backs in front of Sermon. Although, Sanders has dealt with injuries in the past, so that is worth keeping an eye on going into the season.

This run-heavy Philly offense could be a place where Sermon excels, assuming he actually puts it all together.

Is Trey Sermon Worth Drafting In Fantasy Football?

Last season, there was a ton of hype surrounding Sermon after he was drafted.

Now, Sermon will begin the season at the bottom of the depth chart in a new offensive scheme. The potential is there, but it's going to take time for Sermon to get adjusted to his new team.

At the moment, Sermon isn't worth looking at in most 12-team standard formats. However, he is worth considering in deep leagues considering none of the players above him have proven themselves.

He's not expected to make a significant impact right away, so Sermon is more of a dynasty option or a stash in deep leagues.
