There's something really appealing about designated hitters in fantasy:
All they have to do is swing a bat.
Encarnacion is likely to see time at first base, but the Blue Jays would be wise to give a huge chunk of the starts to Chris Colabello. When penciled in as the DH last season, Encarnacion cranked 24 home runs, drove in 75 ribbies, and batted .301 in 309 at-bats. When starting at first, he hit ten less home runes, drove in 41 less RBI’s, and posted a .239 average; a significant difference even with 91 more at-bats as a DH.
Encarnacion is another beneficiary of batting in a stacked Toronto lineup. The likely cleanup hitter again in 2016, Encarnacion did all his damage in the four spot in 2015. He now gets plenty of protection with Tulowitzki projected to bat behind him, and plenty of RBI opportunities with last season’s MVP and a three-time Silver Slugger batting in front of him. There’s nothing that should stop you from drafting Encarnacion inside the top-20 as he has driven in over 100 RBI’s in three of four seasons, while tallying over 30 homers in four straight. All with Toronto.
