The Angels will activate David Freese from the DL on Monday in Oakland against the A’s.
The third baseman has been sidelined since late July with a non-displaced fractured finger. Freese will rejoin an Angels team that failed to fill his spot while he was gone. The replacements hit a combined .183 with two homers over 36 games.
“We certainly appreciate (Freese), but you’re going to notice when he’s not there,” Manager Mike Scioscia told OCregister.com. “Mike (Trout) and Albert (Pujols) get attention for things they do, look at Freese, (Erick) Aybar, (Kole) Calhoun, (Johnny Giavotella), these are guys you appreciate more when they’re not there.”
In 90 games this season, Freese only has a .240 BA but has 11 HR and 43 RBI. It’s not the best of numbers but it’s better than what the replacements have done.
Freese has been playing in rehab games with Triple-A Salt Lake for the past week with no setbacks. The former World Series MVP will look to improve as the Angels try to climb back into the race for the second AL Wild Card spot. They’ve dropped three in a row and trail by 3 1/2 games in the Wild Card standings.
