Zack Greinke pitched another gem on Sunday when he allowed no runs over eight innings pitched to go along with eight strikeouts for the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 victory.
The right-hander almost didn’t get the win because Kanley Jansen allowed the Arizona Diamondbacks to score three times. The Dodgers were able to finish the job and earn their 82nd win of the season. Greinke is now 17-3 with a 1.61 ERA and 0.85 WHIP.
Despite having thrown only 93 pitches, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly did not bring Greinke out for the complete game.
"I wanted to keep that inning off of him," Mattingly told The Los Angeles Times. "Just trying to keep him as strong as we can. With him and Clayton both, they pitch deep into every game, so the innings just pile up."
The Dodgers are well on their way to winning the NL West with a 7 1/2 game lead over the San Francisco Giants but that might not be as certain as Greinke winning the NL Cy Young award. It’s been an outstanding year for the 31-year-old in his fourth season in L.A.
Saturday will be the next start for Greinke as the Dodgers take on the Pittsburgh Pirates.
