ANALYSIS: Jeanmar Gomez entered the 2017 season as a closer on a short leash, and it hasn't taken long to tighten. He has allowed two home runs in three appearances which nearly cost the Phillies two wins in the early going. If Gomez completely loses his grip on the closing gig, Hector Neris is the ideal candidate to move into the role.
Neris was one of the best Phillies relievers all of last season. He held a 2.58 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and an 11.43 K/9 rate. He threw a career-high 80.1 innings in his first full season in the majors, which led to some fatigue down the stretch. Outside of a rough September, he was one of the best relievers in baseball last season. He has yet to allow a run in two appearances this season, with two strikeouts over two innings of work.
There may be some competition for the role, with veterans Joaquin Benoit and Pat Neshek also in the mix. If the job is ultimately given to Neris, he would shoot up the closer ranks immediately as one of the better options available. If you are in a league with multiple RP slots, he is certainly worth adding.
