Steven Matz burst onto the scene in Flushing in 2015. In his MLB debut, Matz displayed the fastball/curveball combo that made him such a highly anticipated prospect. Not only that, but Matz also showed he's rather adept at swinging the bat. Unfortunately, pitcher generated offense doesn't help fantasy owners. Nonetheless, Matz has enough upside just from what he does on the mound.
In six starts, Matz went 4-0 and averaged close to a strikeout per inning. He needs to cut down on the walks a bit, but he should still be a strong middle of the rotation guy for both the Mets and fantasy owners. Also for those concerned with how many innings Matz will pitch this season, Terry Collins recently said that Matz should be able to throw 190 innings if he stays healthy.
That's really the main concern when it comes to Matz. If he's healthy there's no doubt he can be a force, and I think he has as much upside as any sophomore starting pitcher. Yes there's risk involved, but nowadays with the way Tommy John surgery seems to be as common as catching a cold there's risk with every pitcher. I think Matz is worth rolling the dice on. He should be the fourth Met starter off the board, target him in the middle rounds.
