ANALYSIS: Javier Baez is an interesting case. We've seen his power; it's tantalizing. We've seen the high strikeout rates; they're scary. Kyle Schwarber's injury seemed to open up an avenue for Baez to play, but his situation is a bit murky. Needless to say, it makes Baez and the opinions on his fantasy prospects rather polarizing. I'm still optimistic about Baez though.
Right now, Joe Maddon has said that Baez will get two to three starts per week. If this holds true, he's basically just a guy you plug in in daily leagues. However, I don't think that Jorge Soler is the answer in left field, and Baez could steal some playing time from Soler if he hits well. Also, all it would take for Baez to become a starter would be for Maddon to rest any of his other guys once a week. Baez could spell Anthony Rizzo, Addison Russell, Ben Zobrist, Kris Bryant and possibly some of the other outfielders too. Also should there be an injury, Baez would be the top candidate to fill in. If he gets consistent playing time, watch out. The guy's power is legit and, when combined with his versatility, it gives him tremendous upside.
