ANALYSIS: As a productive and reasonably healthy player for the last two seasons, Lowrie has been undervalued as a useful asset for an underrated Oakland Athletics offense. He’s hurt again to start this season, and his timeline is unclear. However, managers with a free DL slot could take advantage of Lowrie’s average power (.181 ISO), strong on-base skills (.353 OBP), and what is sure to be an advantageous position in the Mets’ lineup.
Notably, Lowrie enjoys second-base eligibility and will probably gain third-base eligibility given that Robinson Cano will start at second on most days. The Mets also have Jeff McNeil who they’ll cycle in to rotate through their outfielders. The combination means that Lowrie could end up seeing starts and full infield eligibility by the All-Star Break. Watch for reports that Lowrie has been cleared to run and is headed to extended Spring Training for rehab. Once that process begins, the window for acquiring Lowrie will start to close.
