ANALYSIS: If you, like myself, thought Jedd Gyorko offered valuable versatility as a power hitting 2B/SS combo, then the fact that he is now eligible at four infield positions must really get you excited. First off, Gyorko has improved his plate discipline at a nice margin. Last season he had a 23.4% strikeout rate and meager 5.9% walk rate. This season he is striking out 3% less frequently and walking 2.9% more frequently. While he has always been known for power, he has never had an isolated power number above .195 which he did in 2013, and had a .150 ISO last year. This year in St.Louis, Gyorko has an isolated power of .236. After a really bad month of June in which Gyorko had an ugly OPS of .471, he exploded to hit seven HR and produce a .301/.354/.603 slash line in July. Though he has a bad BA in 49 AB this month, it is fueled by a very unlucky .167 BABIP and he is still slugging .490 with four homers. A player with improved plate discipline who has been hitting for a lot of power? That's awesome. When that player can be used at four infield positions? That's an incredibly valuable acquisition.
