ANALYSIS: When the Houston Texans tight ends scored three TDs in Sunday’s game against the Chargers, it was certainly a departure from the norm at that position. Normally, the Texans TEs are utilized as blockers, but this time they surprised the Chargers by breaking out for significant plays in the passing game.
Second-year TE Jordan Akins caught two of the three scoring passes, including a 53-yarder, and finished with 73 receiving yards on three receptions. Akins now has six receptions for 115 yards so far this season, an average of 19.2 yards per catch. Most of his damage has obviously been done in one game, and last season he had just 17 catches for 225 yards and no scores.
According to USA Today Texans Wire, though, Akins has been working with Deshaun Watson to improvise when plays break down, and head coach Bill O’Brien has been praising him for improvements in his route running. There indeed could be a danger that Akins reverts to a Fantasy non-factor after one impressive performance. But at the ultra-thin position of TE, you have to take a flier on a guy who could possibly build on the best outing of his career so far.
You may not have to spend much at all in FAAB or use a prime waiver bid to acquire Akins, and you should add him if your TE position has been shaky. Spend less than 10 dollars in FAAB in a $1000 cap and you should have a good shot of landing him. If he doesn’t sustain the Fantasy momentum, you can always release him soon.
