Jose Fernandez announced during the Miami Marlins broadcast on Monday that he will make his 2015 debut on July 2, according to the Miami Herald.
The Marlins ace has been making his way back from Tommy John surgery and his anticipated debut against the defending World Series champions, San Francisco Giants.
The right-hander has allowed five runs with a 6/2 K/BB ratio over eight innings in his first two rehab outings, reportedly being clocked as high as 97 mph. He'll make his third rehab start at Triple-A New Orleans on Wednesday, according to the report.
The 22-year-old Cuban-American captivated the Marlins faithful in 2013 with 187 K’s in 172 innings pitched. Fernandez had a 2.18 ERA in 28 starts during his rookie tenure. He was following that campaign with 70 K’s in 50 innings pitched before suffering the elbow injury after eight starts.
Miami could use its young stud because it is 10 games below .500 going into Monday's meeting with the New York Yankees.
