In his short MLB tenure, Jose Iglesias has dazzled baseball fans with his defensive prowess. Unfortunately, fancy glove-work doesn't exactly translate to fantasy value, so Iglesias is often overlooked as a viable option in most leagues--he was owned in just 11% of Yahoo! leagues last season. Still, as an option providing depth at the shortstop position, Iglesias is an intriguing player.
While he won't offer much in terms of HR or RBI, Iglesias is a reliable bat with decent speed and base-running instincts. He has hit .300 or better in each of his first two full MLB seasons with an average OBP of .348 during that time. Those numbers are aided by the fact he doesn't strike out a whole lot and by better than average BABIP numbers, but it seems Iglesias' BABIP is not a product of luck--he has an infield hit percentage of just over ten percent.
For fantasy players looking to add depth to their infield, Jose Iglesias provides pretty reliable value in the late rounds or in free agency.
